The Calorie-Blasting Cardio Workout that Won’t Hurt Your Hips, Knees or Back
[September 30, 2014] You don’t need to run, jump or spin to get a great calorie-blasting workout. Just ask Diana Oliver. After gaining a staggering 100-plus pounds with two closely-spaced and complex pregnancies, she peeled off the pounds with urban poling.
Haven’t heard of it? Urban poling is the contemporary version of classic European Nordic walking – think cross-country skiing without the skis.
“I tried regular walking and the elliptical machine, but my knees hurt if I did more than just a few minutes,” says 35-year-old Oliver, who has lost 130 pounds. “Walking with the poles took the pressure off my knees so I could go a little further each day. It felt challenging in a healthy way, and it was easy to modify the intensity. After a short while, the pounds just started falling off.”
Oliver’s story doesn’t surprise Mandy Shintani, an occupational therapist and managing director of Urban Poling Inc., a Vancouver-based company that designs and manufacturers Nordic walking poles.
“Research shows that urban poling burns up to 46 percent more calories than standard walking because it uses 90 percent of the body’s muscles, including the arms, core and back muscles,” says Shintani.
Researchers have also discovered that when people move from regular walking to urban poling, they move faster, more frequently and for longer distances.
“Once you get the rhythm and the proper arm swing technique it becomes quite addictive, in a very good way,” says Shintani. “Your heart rate goes up, and your joints feel good because you’re offloading weight into the poles.”
As for Oliver, she says that regular urban poling combined with healthy eating has been her lifesaver. She is currently a certified urban poling instructor and recently became a partner in Urban Poling Inc.

Use the standard rhythm and technique, but swing both arms forward at the same time planting the boot tips slightly behind the handles. Then, keeping your arms straight, press down on the base of the handles, walk between your poles and feel your arms extend past your thighs and behind your body.
