A New Study on Osteoporosis At the University of Saskatchewan

Researchers at the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Kinesiology, led by Dr. Kontulainen, are conducting a study of our Activator poles to assess the effects of Nordic walking on mobility, physical function, posture, and quality of life. This investigation is focused on outcomes for individuals with osteoporosis, a history of vertebral fracture or hyperkyphosis. This study will assess the outcomes of this intervention to determine what is working well for this population and what is not. This study is a randomized control exercise intervention where participants are randomly assigned to a Nordic walking or waitlist control group. The duration of the study period is 3 months and will consist of 3 Nordic walking sessions per week either at a mall or in a remote setting such as a home. Exercises will include Nordic walking as well as postural, balance, and muscle strengthening activities supported with the Activator poles. All of the sessions will be tailored for participants and are progressive in nature. The study team includes healthcare decision makers, practitioners, researchers, student volunteers, and trainers representing various disciplines. We look forward to their findings.
