July is Injury Prevention Month

Although every day should be about injury prevention, this month’s focus is all about safety, education and prevention. Did you know that most injuries are related to falls?  Not surprisingly, we’re not as steady on our feet as we age and that just increases the likelihood of losing our balance. That’s why we need to do all that we can today to avoid taking a tumble later.  As the saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

Falls are the number one cause of injury among older Canadians, with 85% becoming hospitalized with fracture-related injuries.  This can all lead to chronic pain, reduced mobility and loss of independence.  It’s a similar situation in the United States, so much so, that the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention recommends strength and balance exercises to help keep us on our feet.  The good news is that falls are preventable and we’re here to help
