Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Canada and the U.S.
Empowering Movement with Urban Poling
Breast Cancer Awareness Month, observed every October in Canada and the U.S., is a time to raise awareness about breast cancer, support survivors, and promote early detection. This annual campaign encourages education, screening, and fundraising for life-saving research. Communities unite in the fight against breast cancer, and survivors are celebrated for their strength and resilience. Did you know that one out of eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime? Although the survival rates are better than ever, it’s still the most common cancer and second leading cause of cancer deaths among women in Canada and the US. So, what are the risk factors and what can be done to help prevent it?
According to the Canadian and American Cancer Societies there are a few things that can increase the risk of developing breast cancer: age (most women are diagnosed after 50), family history (having a mother, daughter, sister with it), inherited genetic mutations, reproductive history, hormone replacement therapy and alcohol consumption. Other factors include being overweight, not getting enough physical activity and exposure to radiation. Please keep in mind that having one or more of these risk factors doesn’t necessarily result in a breast cancer diagnosis.
The fact remains that even though we can’t possibly control all risk factors, there is one that we can totally do something about: getting more physical activity as both a preventative measure and for those on the road to recovery. It’s no secret that walking is good for us but why not maximize the perks with a pair of urban poles? Urban poles provide significant benefits for breast cancer survivors especially those in recovery after treatment. These specially designed poles help with lymphedema management, improve posture, strengthen upper body muscles, and reduce strain on joints. For those experiencing fatigue or weakness, urban poling offers a low-impact, full-body workout that can boost stamina, rebuild confidence, and enhance overall well-being.
Urban poling is more than just exercise—it’s an empowering tool that promotes both physical wellness and emotional recovery. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, let’s not only raise awareness but also encourage physical activities like urban poling for all women in helping minimize their risk factor or to support them while on the road to recovery. We donate 2% of our 4Life pole sales to support breast cancer wellness programs in Canada and couldn’t be prouder. Join us in helping to improve the odds for all the important women in our lives!
