If you’re living with arthritis, you may feel that you’re limited in what you can do to stay active. We say, don’t let yourself get discouraged! Your swimsuit may hold the solution – many people with arthritis benefit from activities like swimming and water aerobics. The Arthritis Society has compiled a handy guide called “Physical Activity & Arthritis” (you can find it here), where they note that being in the water is beneficial “because your body weight is supported, and moving through the water adds resistance… The soothing warmth and buoyancy of warm water make it an ideal environment for relieving arthritis pain and stiffness.”
In addition, you have options on dry land as well; among them, poling with Urban Poling’s Activator. These poles were developed by an occupational therapist working with a team of physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and kinesiologists. The Activator poles are designed for those recovering from injuries and for older adults who require more stability and balance when walking. Poling is a great activity to consider if you have arthritis because it is easy on the joints; specifically, the knees and hips. Keep your poles more upright and in front of you. Lean forward slightly, and use the poles to help push you up the hill. If necessary, bend your elbows, but remember to transition back to the straight arm technique at the top of the hill
