Getting back to walking after a spinal injury or surgery takes time, patience, and the right support, but even small steps can feel like meaningful progress when you feel steadier, safer, and more confident.
How walking poles can help during rehabilitation. Urban Poling, also known as Nordic walking, and Activator® poles can offer steady, practical support as you rebuild strength, balance, and confidence.
Activator® poles pilot study. A pilot study by Rickenbach, Gilbert, Mandel, Lee, and Bruce at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in the UK evaluated posture in healthy adults walking with Activator® poles compared with elbow crutches and walking sticks. The goal was to identify which walking aid best supported an upright posture.
The results showed a statistically significant preference for Activator® poles over walking sticks or elbow crutches. Questionnaire feedback also found that all participants said they would prefer to use Activator® poles if available. In addition, 75% of participants reported they would be willing to pay for the poles, while 25% said they would not. The study was presented as a poster at the 2018 Chartered Society of Physiotherapy Conference in the UK.
How Activator® Poles Can Support Recovery After Spinal Surgery
Walking as part of recovery. After spinal surgery, walking is usually reintroduced slowly and safely with guidance from your healthcare team. Once your surgeon, physiotherapist, or occupational therapist says you are ready, Activator® poles can offer extra support by helping you feel steadier, stand taller, so that walking feels more comfortable.
- Feeling steadier: Using two poles gives you extra support on both sides, which can help
- you feel more secure as you begin walking again.
- Standing taller: Activator® poles can gently remind you to walk in a more upright position and avoid leaning forward.
- Moving your whole body: The poles help strengthen your arms, shoulders, and core for more balanced and coordinated walking.
- Easing pressure on the body: Comfortable CoreGrip handles, stable bell tips, and controlled support may help reduce stress on your wrists, legs, and back.
- Building up gradually: Activator® poles can be used at your own pace, helping you slowly increase walking distance, strength, and confidence over time.
Dr Jack Taunton, former international marathoner and Chief Medical Officer for numerous Canadian Olympic Games, shared his experience using Activator® Poles following seven spinal surgeries, and what an impact they had versus canes and walkers. Use Activator® poles safely. Before using Activator® poles after spinal surgery, check with your surgeon, physiotherapist, or occupational therapist. They can help make sure the poles are the right height, that you are ready to use them, and that you are using the correct technique. This helps you get the support you need while protecting your body as it heals.
