Lets talk about your Bone Health – Osteoporosis Month

November is Osteoporosis Month, but what exactly is Osteoporosis? Most people know that it has to do with the weakening of your bones, but there is more to it than that. Osteoporosis occurs when the human body either loses bone, doesn’t create enough, or there is a combination of both. The result is the weakening of the bones and the increase in risk of fractures if the individual falls.

On average Osteoporosis affects 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men across Canada affecting a total of 2 million Canadians. Although it is a disease that most commonly effects those over the age of 50, it can occur in people of all age ranges and ethnicities. According to Osteoporosis Canada, fractures resulting from Osteoporosis “…are more common than heart attack, stroke and breast cancer combined” (Osteoporosis Canada, 2018, para 2).

The peak time for bone development is during childhood, however there are still ways to help slow the rate of bone loss, and prolonging your bone mineral density. Physical activity, for example is one of the ways that can help slow the rate of bone loss. Urban Poling is a great low intensity activity that is good for all age groups. What makes Urban Poling better than just regular walking you might ask. Well by walking with poles you target 90% of your major muscles not to mention it can burn up to 46% more calories! Urban Poling is a unique activity with unique benefits that can be a great tool in maintaining your bone health.
